Biographical Note

[information from donor] The John Wakeen family emigrated in 1893 - the name recorded on immigration or naturalization or the marriage was John Mike. Fayz Wakeen was born in La Crosse and met and married Helen Patros in La Crosse (the Patros name was recorded as Peterson in the emigration record). The family attended St. Mary's Catholic Church and school but eventually went to St. James Catholic which was much closer to their home. Of Syrian or more specically Lebanese descent, the family was in the grocery business. Other relatives had a steel business and another a shoe repair business. Most family lived on the city's North Side, on Caledonia Street and Mill Street (now Copeland Avenue).
