Biographical Note

James Herbert Cameron Jr. (1914-2006) was born in La Crosse, WIsconsin, but spent his formative years in Indiana. He is the only known person to have survived a lynching. A civil rights activist, Cameron was responsible for founding three chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Cameron participated in many civil rights marches and efforts and while incarcerated, Cameron wrote a memoir entitled, A Time of Terror: A Survivor’s Story. He later established America’s Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he lived from 1950 until his death.
