La Crosse, Wisconsin, City Health Department Slides
Scope and Contents
Color slides from the La Crosse City Health Department show dilapidated housing properties in La Crosse, especially on Green Island. The slides are marked with handwritten numbers 1-3, and presumably come from three different rolls of film. The slides are also stamped with a number and are placed in order according to the stamped number. Some slides from each roll of film are missing.
The first group of 24 slides, marked by hand with a “1,” are stamped with the date February 1961, and show properties at 728 Monitor Street, 204 Sumner Street, 215 Sumner Street, 723 Copeland Street, 433 Caledonia Street, 829 Gould Street, 1008 Avon Street, 726 Charles Street, 820 Charles Street, 911 Charles Street, St. Paul and Liberty Streets, 1448 Loomis Street, 1619½ Cunningham Street, 1832 Caledonia Street, and the South Asfor Junkyard.
The 31 slides in the second group, marked by hand with a “2,” are not stamped with a date, and were probably taken in 1969. These slides show the South Asfor Junkyard and a shack at the rear of the Olympia Hotel. Other properties shown are on Shelby Street, 2012 Miller Street, 2006 Miller Street, 1820 Miller Street, 1815 Miller Street, 1920 Fannell Drive, 1907 Fannell Drive, 1903 Fannell Drive, East McCumber Street, West McCumber Street, 105 McCumber Street, 607 Shelby Drive, 611 Shelby Drive, 1609 S. 10th Street, the northeast corner of 15th and Farnam Streets, 1107 S. 3rd Street, 1026 S. 2nd Street, 216 N. 2nd Street, 1307 S. 6th Street, the rear of 1523 S. 6th Street, and the rear of 901 Denton Street.
The 24 slides in the third group, marked by hand with a “3,” are also not stamped with a date, and were likely taken in 1969. These slides show properties on 2218 Charles Street, 2123 Liberty Street, Liberty and Hayes Streets, Moore Street, 2226 Onalaska Court, 1614 Moore Street, 1618 Moore Street, 1932 Prospect Street, 1827 Onalaska Street, 1448 Loomis Street, 1937 Tyler Street, 1517 Weston Street, 1506 South 11th Street, Vine and 8th Streets, 914 Badger Street, and 6th and State Streets.
Another group of 14 color slides from the City Health Department are from a Garbage and Refuse Survey done by Human Ecology Students in the city of La Crosse on Nov. 7, 1973. The slides are not labeled with specific street addresses or locations.
The last folder contains one color slide taken in 1979 showing the kitchen of an unknown La Crosse restaurant.

Abstract
Color slides from the La Crosse City Health Department show images of dilapidated housing properties in La Crosse, especially on Green Island, taken in 1961 and 1969. Most slides of these properties are labeled with the location or street address of the property.
Other color slides are from a 1973 Garbage and Refuse Survey done by Human Ecology Students. Images show garbage and refuse in the city of La Crosse ready to be picked up by garbage collectors. Locations are not labeled.
The last grouping of slides contains a single color image taken in 1979 of an kitchen from an unknown La Crosse restaurant.
