Biographical/Historical Note
The La Crosse Plugs was organized on May 10, 1932 and incorporatied on March 16, 1936. The name originates from the "plug hats" (similar to top hats) worn by businessmen and gentlemen during the latter half of the nineteenth century. As described in the History of The La Crosse Plugs, during the 1930s, or the Great Depression, La Crosse too felt the impact of the economic and social downturn. The objective of the La Crosse Plugs was to give La Crosse, Wis. and its citizens an added dose of enthusiam and frivolity during the Great Depression at local events and festivals. For such events, the group would assemble in their plug hats to uplift attendees and communities.
