Biographical

This brief narrative follows the adult life of Harman Van Slyke Sacia from the time he left Schenectady, New York, in 1834, to travel west to Wisconsin. Sacia married Cordelia Sophia Packard of Milwaukee on June 23, 1841. After their marriage they lived in various parts of Wisconsin. In the 1840s, Sacia left his wife and family back in Wisconsin to pusue the promise of gold in California.

Sacia, however found no riches and soon after began to make his way back to Wisconsin. On his return journey, Sacia met Brigham Young, the leader of the early Mormon Church, near Salt Lake in Utah. After returning to his family in Wisconsin, Sacia also fought in the Civil War as a member of the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company "I", which served Union Army and had "Old Abe," the bald eagle as its mascot. Sacia was however, captured by the enemy at the Battle of Farmington, Mississippi, on May 9, 1862, and spent the duration of the war as a POW at Andersonville Camp in Georgia. Sacia died in 1893.
