Papers created and compiled by Margaret Larson in her role as editor and author of the League of Women Voters of La Crosse County's book project about Coulee region women and their history and contributions to the La Crosse community.

The papers follow the same organization as the book For the Common Good: A History of Women's Roles in La Crosse County, 1920-1980, and generally include notes from interviews and some photocopied articles and other materials used in writing the book.

The introduction gives the background on the League's project and corrections to the book. "In the Home" follows general homemaking and the La Crosse County Extension Homemakers. "In the Workplace" is broken down more specifically to types of service, business and industry. "In the Community" highlights women's contributions to social action groups and causes, and cultural movements.

A manuscript draft of the book is also included, as well as a folder on post publication information. The collection does not include any biographical or personal information about the author.

Biographical Note

Margaret Sturm Larson, a resident of La Crosse, Wisconsin, since 1977, graduated in 1973 from the University of Illinois with a degree in American history and literature. She is a free-lance writer who was hired by the League of Women Voters of La Crosse County to coordinate the book commemorating the 75th anniversary of women's contributions to their community since the inception of the national League of Women Voters organization in 1920. The 75th Anniversary Committee and the League's Editorial Advisory Board oversaw progress on the book and helped to enlist area young women in high school to help with some of the interviews and fact finding missions. The book was published in 1996.
