Jefferson School, also known as Fifth Ward School, was built in 1877. Located on the corner of St. James and Caledonia Streets, it was razed in 1950, and was replaced by Jefferson Elementary, which opened to classes in 1950. Parent organizations were supportive of the school and its students. A Mother’s Club was formed in 1921, and by 1943, became the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).
